Getting around in Chiang Mai

Live your dream in a peaceful and safe environment where you are respected for your Seniority, with almost no Covid risk or restrictions

The best place to retire in Thailand is the stunning city of Chiang Mai.

Located in the north of Thailand, Chiang Mai is a beautiful combination of modern vibes and conveniences with over 700 years of history.

Known as ‘The rose of the North’, it is a city with almost everything you could possibly desire.

It is a rich and vibrant tourist centre with many popular areas, activities and shopping options. It is also a city with endless hidden gems.

Chiang Mai is large enough to contain a variety of golf courses, hundreds of relaxing spas, thousands of restaurants, several impressive shopping malls and over 300 temples around the city.

At the same time, Chiang Mai is small enough to be able to easily drive, ride a motorcycle, catch a cheap song-thaew (red mini-bus), taxi, or one of the famous tuk-tuks, to get around.

If you can’t find what you desire here, a quick and inexpensive flight to Bangkok or the coast will definitely solve your needs.

Getting around Chiang Mai is easy:

Drive Yourself

It is very easy to convert your Western Driving Liscence to a Thai liscence.

There are many different Brands of cars, SUV’s and pickups available.

Thailand is right hand drive, like the UK. If you are used to left hand drive like Europe of the US, it does not take long to get the hang of driving on the ‘wrong side of the road’.

Motorcycles are popular for the open road and daytrips.

The weather is great, and you see so much more from the bike. This also offers great fun offroad in rural coutryside areas.

We really enjoy our daytrips on the bike.

Off Road Trips

4 X 4’s are popular, and reletively inexpensive compared to BMW’s and Merc’s.

Many countryside roads peter out into tracks like in the picture.

We use a 4 wd luxury SUV to get around the counrtyside.

Quiet charming country roads

Thailand has some lovely scenic country roads that are in good condition.

There are many lovely mountainside roads and coastal roads that are stunning.

Inter City Highways

Long distance travel between cities is easy on good well paved roads.

There are many filling stations and roadside food stalls, to break the travel into pleasant bites.

Tuk Tuks's and Taxi's

Chiang Mai has thousands of tuk tuks to get around.

Using a Grab Taxi, or tuk tuk, is the easiest way of getting around if you do not want to drive.

Many Seniors are no longer confident to drive, so they rely on public transport to get around.

Red Bus

Red Bus or Sang Teauw is the cheapest way to get around in the city.

You pay a flat fee of Baht 30 (less than a dollar) for your trip.

One can also rent the whole bus like a taxi, and they will wait for you (or even help you) while you do your shopping. The cost depends on distance and how many hours you would like them for.

Buses and intercity Coaches

Inter city travel is cheap and efficient by coach.

There are many services running to most parts of the country.

Most of the coaches are luxury class with proper comfortable seating and airconditioning.

Chiang Mai has a train station, and trains are cheap to use.

Trains run to many of the main cities.

Unfortunately there are not always luxury options.

Flying

Chiang Mai has an international airport. Domestic Air travel is cheap and effecient.

One can fly to most domestic locations, and to many other Aisian coutries, like Vietnam, China, Singapore and Cambodia.

Most international destinations fly out of Bangkok.

It is not the future you are afraid of.  It is repeating the past that makes you anxious.
